Mandatory ventilation and spontaneous effort have to coexist. A patient recovering enough to take a breath will do so at whatever point in the cycle the urge arrives, and what the ventilator does at that moment shapes both comfort and the work of breathing.

The Evita 2 dura is built around accommodating it. The breathing system is open, so a spontaneous breath is available throughout the cycle in the pressure-controlled modes rather than only during a defined window. A multi-sense trigger watches for pressure, flow and volume, with the flow trigger adjustable from 0.3 to 15 L/min so sensitivity is set to the patient.
