Laboratory CAD/CAM production covers most of the fixed prosthodontic workload in UK dentistry, and the 52DCs is built for the high-volume end of it. The published application list marks crown and coping, crown and coping bridge, screw-retained bridge in crown and coping form, customised abutment, hybrid abutment, inlay and onlay, model and denture as compatible.
The material list defines that scope: zirconia, PMMA, PEEK and wax are supported, while pre-milled blanks, cobalt chrome, titanium and glass ceramic are not. A laboratory producing monolithic and layered zirconia, polymer temporaries, PEEK frameworks, wax patterns and milled models is well matched. One also milling glass ceramic inlays or metal substructures needs a separate route for that work.
Batch production is where the tray earns its place. Three discs changed automatically within a cycle means a queue proceeds without an operator waiting to reload, which for many laboratories shifts the bottleneck from staffing to machine hours. Turnaround commitments to referring practices are usually set by the slowest step in the chain, and blank changeover is often that step.
Abutment work sits at an interesting boundary. Customised and hybrid abutments are marked compatible, pointing to zirconia and PEEK components rather than titanium, while implant bars are marked not compatible. A laboratory taking implant work should read that line carefully against what it actually produces, and should resolve the titanium question with the manufacturer before assuming metal capability.
Bite splints are marked not compatible despite the machine cutting PMMA, with blank height against the 115 mm Z travel the likely constraint — confirm before planning splint production.
Dust control is where a dry machine places its demands, with respirable zirconia dust falling within COSHH and local exhaust ventilation carrying statutory examination duties. Laboratory obligations sit alongside: MHRA registration for manufacturers of custom-made devices, GDC registration for technicians, material conformity documentation and batch traceability.
